SEVI 261 – SPANISH LANGUAGE IN CONTEXT
Course that uses literature, film and culture as a basis for reviewing grammatical concepts, developing writing competency and improving overall communication skills.
SEVI 265 SPANISH FOR THE PROFESSIONS / El español para las profesiones.
A course emphasizing the vocabulary and structures of the language of mass communications, business, health professions, and political institutions.
SEVI 301 – INTRODUCTION TO LITERARY AND CULTURAL ANALYSIS
Prepares students to formulate and to communicate critical analyses of literary works in various genres (theatre, poetry, essay, narrative and film), while placing the readings within a cultural context.
SEVI 302 – SPANISH FOR BUSINESS/ Español para los negocios
Covers concepts and vocabulary related to business in the Spanish-speaking world and its global partners, with the aim of providing a globalized economic panorama. The course gives special emphasis to business organization, resources, goods and services, marketing, cultural and economic characteristics of Spanish-speaking countries.
SEVI 303- HEALTH AND THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY/ Salud y la comunidad hispana
“Salud y la comunidad hispana” is designed for Clemson University students enrolled in the Language and International Health Program who plan to work in professions related to health care. This course explores cultural aspects in the field of health and health care services with a focus on Hispanic populations, while teaching students how to think critically when evaluating health care systems and providing them with the opportunity to work hand in hand with people and organizations within the community.
SEVI 321 – SPANISH FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS / Español para profesionales de la salud
Explores concepts and terminology related to the medical field using and with respect to the Spanish language. This course is designed for students who plan to work in health-related professions.
SEVI 331- SPAIN AND THE AMERICAS/ España y las Américas
Study of the historical, social, and political consequences of the age of discovery and colonization: Spain at the time of expansion, the indigenous peoples of the Americas, the form and function of colonial government, social unrest, independence, and the decline of Spain.
SEVI 332 – SPAIN TODAY / España Inmediata
An historical analysis and contextualization of daily occurrences in Spain. This course renders special attention to Spanish political, social and economic situation, and the analysis of its international relations (mainly European Union, Arab countries, Latin America countries and U.S.A.). Also it analyzes topics such as the relations between the Catholic Church and the State, the Spanish nationalisms or immigration.
SEVI 333 – SPAIN AND ISLAM / España ante el Islam
A study of the history, art and culture of Islam and of Spain and Europe’s relationship with Islam.
SEVI 334- Global Issues on the First Trans-Atlantic Culture-Special Topics
This course analylzes how the first transatlantic culture, originated by the encounter between Europe and the New World in 1492, changed the course of history and the modern world. We will discuss the unfolding of events and ideas that shaped the minds and actions of people from this time period, while tracing a timeline of events crucial for our understanding of the modern world. We will also explore how the first transatlantic culture based on commerce influenced our modern globalized trade system.
SEVI 341 – ART AND CULTURE OF SPAIN / Arte y Cultura de España
Introduction to the history of Spain and the major styles of Spanish art. Includes visits to monuments and museums.
SEVI 343 – SPAIN AND THE EUROPEAN UNION / España y la Unión Europea
The history of the development of the European Union with special attention to its current and future political and economic structure, its agencies and institutions, the role of Spain, its relationship to Latin America, and the present and future of the Union within the international community.
SEVI 361 – HISTORY AND ANALYSIS OF SPANISH FILM / Historia y análisis del cine español
A brief tour of the history of Spanish film from its orgins through today. This course will analyze films in order to help students better understand Spanish Society and increase confidence in their ability to communicate (via reading, writing, speaking and listening) in Spanish.
SEVI 371 – Studies in Spanish Literature / Análisis de la literatura española
Study of the literatures of Spain centering on representative authors and texts from various literary movements, situates within their sociohistorical contexts.
SPAN 3140 – Introduction to Spanish Linguistics / Introducción a la lingüística hispánica
This course offers an introduction to the main concepts and methods of linguistic analysis, which serve as a tool to explore current approaches to linguistic enquiry from a myriad of perspectives.
