This program is a faculty-led summer program that will allow students to complete their Spanish for the Professions Minor (all tracks), visit local companies and/or nonprofits while experiencing to the fullest the beautiful city of Sevilla in Southern Spain.
Students interested in this program have two options to complete the Spanish for the Professions Minor:
This course will count as a Spanish 300 elective course requirement for the Spanish for the professions minor, but could vary in content from year to year. Regardless of the focus of the course, it will use a variety of documents (text, movies, articles, media videos, and essays) as a basis for reviewing grammatical concepts and vocabulary related to all Spanish for the professions tracks, while developing writing competency, refining analytical skills, and improving overall communication abilities in Spanish. Through work on different types of documents, this course continues to focus on refining the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as further developing critical analytical capacities. With the readings and films, students will explore their socio-historical context and analyze the application of different linguistic structures as tools employed to make meaningful communication. Students will be expected to do a significant amount of reading, speaking and writing.
Taught by a UNC professor, students receive UNC graded credit for the course; the grade received in this course WILL affect the student’s UNC GPA.
Prerequisite, SPAN 320, 321 or 323. Eight-semester capstone course applying skills in Spanish language and cultures to professional and community contexts. Assignments include professional documents, community service work and projects, and a research project. Open only to students in the minor in Spanish for the professions.
Visits to local companies and/or nonprofits and interacting with local professionals are important components of the program. SPAN 3— and SPAN 329 include site visits to local businesses and/or nonprofits in Sevilla designed to help students experience the environment and meet the people in Spanish professional context.
Classes will be held Monday-Friday. You are expected to attend every class, take all exams as scheduled by the professor, and turn in written work as required for the individual course. You should also be aware that: Traveling is an educational experience, but you are expected to schedule your traveling around your academic needs, not vice versa. You should plan to travel before the program begins or after the program has ended, not during the official program dates. If you are out of town and in the process miss an exam or fail to turn in written work, you will receive an “F” for that portion of your grade.
The SPAN 329 course will receive graded UNC credit. Please refer to the Credit Information Sheet on the UNC Study Abroad website for more information.
All grades (notas, calificaciones) in courses other than SPAN 329 will be based either on a number scale (1-10, 10 being the highest grade) or the words sobresaliente, notable, aprobado, suspenso. Students will need to receive a grade of 5 or aprobado to receive credit at UNC. The grades you earn will not count towards your GPA unless you receive a failing grade. Failing grades will be calculated into your UNC GPA as an F. Please refer to the credit information on the UNC Study Abroad website.

Nervión is a sprawling, modern neighborhood located in the eastern part of the city. It has a residential feel, and is an important economic and commercial zone. Some of the most sought after homes in all of Seville can be found in Nervión in areas such as Ciudad Jardín, which was built for the Ibero-American Exposition in 1929 and made up of houses built in the Regionalist style. In Nervión, you can catch a soccer match for one of Seville’s teams at the Sevilla Futbol Club’s stadium, as well as catch a train at the Santa Justa train station. Nervión offers several shopping areas, including Los Arcos shopping center and Nervión Plaza where one can also catch movies in their original version.
