Program Overview

Sevilla is the capital city of Andalucía, one of the most visited, colorful and historically significant regions of Spain. Sevilla is perhaps best known for being one of the most important Moorish kingdoms of the Middle Ages and the center of trade with the New World during the colonial era. In addition, many of the typically “Spanish” cultural phenomena that attract tourists (flamenco, bullfighting, tapas and olive orchards) are identified with this Southern city. With over one million inhabitants, the capital city has a lot to offer, without feeling congested or overwhelming like many large cities.

Courses are taught at EUSA (Estudios Universitarios y Superiores de Andalucía), affiliated with the University of Seville since 1996. EUSA is a private school in Nervión, a fashionable neighborhood just a short walk away from historical monuments, parks, shopping centers and a major soccer stadium. In addition to a convenient wi-fi network to which students can connect their personal computers and smartphones, EUSA provides a modern computer lab with wired Internet access and printing facilities. There is also an in-house library, a cafeteria on site, sports facilities, and daily interaction with Spanish students.

Grand Valley State University – Summer in Sevilla

All courses offered in Seville are UR courses and will transfer with the regular A-F grade scale. Students may earn up to 2 units

SPA 309: Advanced Spanish Grammar (3 credits)

This course will explore the diverse cultures and the interrelationship between Latin America and Spain over five centuries (from 1492 to present). The course will also study how Seville served as the cultural axis between the New World and Europe for centuries. The course is taught in English and is open to students from other disciplines.

SPA 310: Spanish Civilization and Culture (3 credits)

An intensive introductory course designed to present the fundamentals necessary for understanding, speaking, reading and writing Spanish and to provide a range of opportunities for students to gain practical insights into the customs and cultural contexts of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world.

Program Registration and Cost

Registration Deadlines
You will register for classes before arriving in Sevilla. You will be allowed to make changes to your schedule during the first two days of classes.

Notes on Registration
As is true for registration at your home college or university, it is the responsibility of each student to make sure that (s)he has officially registered all course changes with the program.

Class Attendance
Classes will be held Monday-Friday. You are expected to attend every class, take all exams as scheduled by the professor, and turn in written work as required for the individual course.

You should also be aware that:

  • Traveling is an educational experience, but you are expected to schedule your traveling around your academic needs, not vice versa. You should plan to travel before the program begins or after the program has ended, not during the official program dates. If you are out of town and in the process miss an exam or fail to turn in written work, you will receive an “F” for that portion of your grade.

Grades
All grades (notas, calificaciones) in courses will be based either on a number scale (1-10, 10 being the highest grade) or the words sobresaliente, notable, aprobado, suspenso. Students will need to receive a grade of 5 or aprobado in order to receive credit.

SCHOLARSHIPS/GRANTS:

Students may fund study abroad by using financial aid, scholarships, grants and personal funds. A study abroad adviser can help you create a funding plan.

FACULTY-LED PROGRAM GRANT (Up to $1,500): All degree-seeking students who apply to their faculty-led program by the priority deadline are automatically considered for a grant of up to $1,500 from the Padnos International Center. Students must have a current FAFSA on file to be eligible. No application required.

James F. and Virginia L. Goode Global Programs Scholarship: The purpose of the scholarship is to reduce the financial pressure on students and their families and make a Grand Valley education accessible to students from all backgrounds. This need-based scholarship will ensure that financial need does not become a barrier to intellectual and personal growth for students planning to study abroad. To contact the Financial Aid office, email finaid@gvsu.edu with “Study Abroad” in the Subject line. Include your G Number and Total Projected Cost of the program in the e-mail.

Non-GVSU Students: Non-GVSU students admitted for study abroad are not eligible for Financial Aid from GVSU. Check with your home school’s study abroad and financial aid offices for details on applying for financial aid from your home school toward study abroad program costs.
