Summer GE Spanish Language Program

Program Overview

The Summer GE Spanish Language Program  is intended for sophomore, junior or senior students who have taken through Spanish 1101, 1102 or 1155 . Students will earn 8 hours of Spanish language credit while in Sevilla:

       – Students with Spanish 1101 will earn credit for Spanish 1102 (4 credits) and 1103 (4 credits)

       – Students with Spanish 1102 will earn credit for Spanish 1103 (4 credits), 2202 (3 credits), and 2797 (1 credit)

Each course a student takes abroad, regardless of the grade received or how course credit counts toward degree requirements, must:

         – Transfer back to the student’s OSU record

         – Be completed for graded OSU credit. This grade will be factored into the student’s GPA

COWA for Ohio State: Summer GE Spanish Language Program

During 6 weeks in Seville, students will complete 2-3 courses to earn eight credits. These courses have been pre-approved for Ohio State graded credit. All courses feature face-to-face instruction with the same number of contact hours as their Ohio State equivalents and some also include service-learning or other community-engagement components. The program also provides cultural activities and excursions to complement in-class learning and to maximize cultural understanding.

Courses are taught at COWA’s facilities located  in front of María Luisa’s Park, only minutes away from the city center on foot. Well connected with public transportation, COWA’s HQs include fully equipped intelligent classrooms, offices for incoming visiting faculty and students, as well a 1000 square foot indoor study area/auditorium to host activities for students such as live music, dance workshops, language exchanges, or simply hanging out. Additionally, we have a locked safe on site that allows us to securely store sensitive items for students.

Information and Application

  • Duration: 6-weeks.
  • Requirements: students must have at least sophomore standing (at the time of participation), a 2.7 cumulative GPA, 3.0 Spanish GPA and have successfully completed Spanish 1101, 1155, or 1102.
  • Housing: Homestay with Spanish host family (meals and laundry provided)
  • Academic Credit: All COWA courses taken will transfer directly as Ohio State graded credits. Students will take 8 credits of Spanish language credit
  • Senior students may not graduate during the same term in which they are participating.

The program fee will be 2,950€ (aprox. $3,400) per student. This fee can be payed in one or two payments. The first payment due by April 1st (1,475$) and the second payment due by May 1st (1,475$). The fee includes:

  • In-country orientation
  • 24/7 emergency support
  • Welcome and goodbye dinners
  • All activities and excursions
  • Full room and board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in Spanish host families
  • One night hotel stay upon arrival in Seville

The fee does not include:

  • Airfare (flights to and from Seville)
  • Personal expenses
  • Books
  • A complete application must include:

  • Application deadline: Tuesday, February 22nd
  • Decision date: Tuesday, March 15th
  • Start date: Wednesday, May 11th
  • End date: Monday, June 20th

*Students must also complete an application with the OSU Office of International Affairs (OIA) in order to be considered for the program.
